Have I mentioned recently that I LOVE the X-Men? Yeah, they were the first Marvel characters I really got into. I saw that old X-Men cartoon series and totally fell in love with Gambit and Cyclops. [Gambit because he was just that cool and Cyke because… well… he wore glasses and kicked ass. And I wore glasses and thus was all for glasses folk kicking ass. :3 I was 8. No judgement. >.>] After that one thing lead to another, lead to me reading the comics and eventually buying an X-Men Encyclopedia. This was before I knew of Wiki and all… :P That book taught me a gigantic chunk of X-canon and thus, I can now dive into their stories, regardless of when it was written and still know my way around.
Thus, I was able to sit down with this book, confident that I’d know what’s what. And let me ask you; have I mentioned recently that I just simply love the X-Men? This book [and others like it] immodestly shows off why.
For starters, it is gigantic collecting about 4 X-series and one One Shot [with art by the phenomenal Marc Silvestri, no less <3 <3 <3!!]. It’s the entire Messiah Complex storyline in one awesome book.
Then there’s the bit about the art. Of course it’s not uniform, what with different artists working on different titles. But it all looks great and I have come to like Humberto Ramos’ art better now… The covers were also fabulous. Some of them might live on as Marvel Prints on the walls of fans. And while on the subject of art, the costume designs, while not new are great and pretty damn consistent, even if someone from X-Factor stars in a New X-Men story or whatever… I also liked the new Mr. Sinister design along with the Predator X design. Another favourite was Jamie Madrox’s [Multiple Man] costume. Nice coat, bro! O_O
Now the writing. The whole story was well planned out [they even included some plotting notes on the back, which was interesting and insightful] and the characterizations were spot on and consistent no matter which title they appeared in, leading me to believe that there was a good bit of co-operation behind the scenes, which is always a good sign. The twists were twisty, the turns were turney and the pacing was great. There were no skippable bits, due to having no relevance. And another thing I liked about this book, in terms of the story is how they pretty much threw out every relevant thing in X-canon except the [metaphorical] kitchen sink! Everyone from Xavier to Mystique to Gambit to Cable to Lady Deathstrike to even Elixir showed up, all well characterized, believable and incredibly likable. Speaking of likable? These bastards [and I do mean that in the nicest possible way] even made WOLVERINE likable! D: I haven’t liked Wolverine since 1999. [Not counting X-Men Evolution…] >.> Great job, guys. Like really… o.o
And for those tuning in to X-canon, the story so far [in the shortest possible way] is this:
1) House of M: where Scarlet Witch did her weird magic to remake Earth in a way to give everyone [especially Magneto] their fondest desire. Mutants ruled. It was [fake] good. Then it fell apart thanks to the heroes of Marvel. Scarlet Witch [who is a psycho bitch] was totally pissed and immersed in ginormous amounts of magic when she uttered the words, “No more mutants.” Which lead us to –
2) Decimation: where almost all the mutants in the world were depowered, leaving only 198 known mutants. The thriving mutant society was now only a jump, hop and skip away from extinction. People were rather annoyed in general. And there were no more new mutants. But then –
3) Messiah Complex: occurred [that’s this book] and a new mutant baby was born. Isn’t that nice? :) Except, her very birth seems to have razed a whole Alaskan town to the ground. And now, everyone wants the baby for their own agenda. [Everyone being the X-Men, Sinister’s Marauders, the Purifiers, Cable and even that beastly Predator X.]
This is the story of that baby.
We good? Good. Now the verdict: This book is fucking awesome. Like REALLY, REALLY fucking awesome. This kind of story is something the X-Men have missed. I’m glad it’s back… The writing is not ha-ha funny like in Incredible Herc or Agents of Atlas but that’s ok. It doesn’t have to be. This isn’t a LOL kind of story. This is a gritty action-y mutant VS mutant VS human VS God-only-knows-what-else brawl with time travel and globetrotting and the perfect balance of boobs and explosions. The art is fitting and really good. I also loved the colouring, which I don’t really notice, normally. The pacing was great, the conclusion was great and they really shook the status-quo to and fro with this one. And I loved every moment of it. This is recommended for any X-fan.
Now I am going to point out random things I loved about this book. The review is over. Think of this as the funny credits sequence… minus the credits, of course. :P I loved how Cyclops was characterized as the general of the X-Men. And the scene where he elbowed Prof X outta the way and took charge really shows how far the series has come since Prof X got 5 mutants together as his students and named them “X-Men for the ‘X-traordinary’ gifts granted by their X-gene.” I loved how the series is now progressing good, better even without Jean Grey. [Haters, please don’t. I know what I’m talking about. ^^] I loved Layla Miller’s character sometimes. Other times, I wanted to slap her. but that’s because I usually hate know-it-alls younger than me. :P I liked the New X-Men team. I reviewed how I didn’t like the Young X-Men, right? That’s still true. But the New X-Men are better and more awesome. [I even bought one of their TPBs some time back… ^^] I loved how the grizzled soldier Cable was good with kids, I loved X-23 throughout and I loved the portrayal of Dust as well… Reading this book is like watching someone farm. They had planted some seeds before, the seeds grew into crops, they reaped what they sowed and at the end, fresh seeds are planted. This is all metaphorical and will not be further explained. [Think: context of a story. >.>] I loved Mr. Sinister’s new hairstyle. Lookin’ sharp Nathan~! :P
Have I mentioned recently that I love the X-Men? :3
